enrG-IV Goes Beyond the Needle with Functional Medicine
by Meredith Montgomery
When her father was diagnosed with cancer 12 years ago, Janet Baker’s perspective shifted. “The doctors wanted to put a feeding tube in and start radiation immediately, but he didn’t want to go the conventional route because it frightened him,” says Baker, who has been a registered nurse since 1995. He was allowed to have a port put in for intravenous (IV) vitamin therapy and ozone therapy at home. Oncologists said that without traditional treatment, he may live six months, but he lived nine without pain or surgery. “Had we changed his diet, I think he would have had a longer life, but that wasn’t his choice,” Baker says.
This experience opened up a new world for Baker, who left her hospital job for research work, eventually landing in a Trussville practice that focused on natural health and the opening of an IV clinic. When her grandchildren relocated to south Alabama, Baker noticed there was not a clinic in the area that provided natural IV therapy. “Other IV clinics used preservatives in their products and that wasn’t a good fit for me. It was also difficult to find functional medicine practitioners,” she says.
Baker filled that hole in the local market in 2017 by opening enrG-IV, a nutritional IV lounge and functional medicine clinic. Clients enjoy the spa-like environment of this Orange Beach business—many saying their stress floats away when they walk through the door. Stylish decor, comfortable recliners, flat screen TVs and WiFi allow individuals to relax and rehydrate in the lounge, with private rooms available as well. Sessions typically last 20 to 60 minutes, and because enrG-IV cocktails do not have any preservatives, they’re easy to tolerate—even for those with allergies who are often turned away by other clinics.
“Most people come to us with fatigue and brain fog, and most people feel better before they leave the office,” Baker says. She also commonly works with clients who have Lyme disease, autoimmune disorders and hypothyroidism, as well as healthy individuals looking to increase immune function or enhance athletic performance. IV works because vitamins, minerals and nutrients administered directly into the bloodstream bypass the digestive system and are absorbed completely. “You only absorb 20 percent of anything you take in orally, but you absorb 100 percent of what you get by IV,” Baker explains.
In addition to IV therapy, enrG-IV offers an oxygen bar, bio-identical hormone therapy, B-12 injections, physical vascular therapy and extensive, state-of-the-art testing that reveals nutritional deficiencies. “Our hair tests offer a simple way to test for 700 allergies, which is super easy especially for kids,” Baker says.
Functional medicine seeks out the root cause of symptoms and offers natural treatment methods to eliminate the core problem and stop symptoms completely. The enrG-IV staff spends time with each client to get to know their history and do an extensive physical assessment. “We base our decision on how to help clients on what they tell us is going on and how long it’s been going on,” Baker says.
With a passion for improving metabolism naturally, Baker also offers a weight loss program that is tailored to meet the needs of each individual. No stimulants or diuretics are used, and the focus is on food type, not calorie counting. “If someone has been eating badly their whole life, we focus on education, but most women have been on so many diets that it’s more of a lifestyle adjustment program than a weight loss program,” she says.
Whether or not weight loss is a goal, Baker emphasizes that nutrition is paramount to overall wellness for everyone. She often reminds her clients that “if you’re putting inflammatory foods into your body and I’m putting anti-inflammatory vitamins in your IV, we are going to counteract each other, so it’s really important to eat nutritious foods.”
From the health challenges that accompany chronic disease to a headache after a late night out, enrG-IV can help, naturally.
